He was in the 3rd County of London Yeomanry from 1908 to 1913.

Wartime Service

Frederick re-enlisted a few weeks after the outbreak of war and served in Egypt from April to August 1915 when he was sent to Gallipoli. There he acted as a stretcher-bearer in the Battle near Suvla Bay on the 21st of August and was killed in action on the 4th of September 1915. He was buried near Chocolate Hill, Gallipoli.

A comrade wrote: "During the three weeks we worked with Norman, sometimes under most trying circumstances, his perseverance, courage and good-fellowship considerably assisted us in our work" and another wrote: "His gallant conduct in the field won admiration and praise from us all."

He has an entry in De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour.

He was originally buried in Green Hill No. 1 cemetery, row 23 grave 15. He was exhumed and reburied in Green Hill plot 1, row D, grave 2.
