Alfred William CHILDS was born in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, on 7th or 9th September 1899, son of Sarah Childs.


He was Baptised on 20th September 1899 at the Church of St Giles, South Mimms, Herts.


1901 Census records Alfred aged 1, living with his Grandparents William and Jane Childs in South Mimms, Herts.


1911 Census, William aged 11, is a school, living with his widowed Grandmother Jane Childs, in South Mimms, Herts. His mother Sarah Childs, is recorded as a live-in General Domestic Servant at 66 High Street Chipping Barnet, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted at Whitehall, London, posted to the 3rd (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers) and issued with the service number 254533. Alfred was attached to the 2nd/2nd Battalion, arriving in France on 5th June 1918, he died of wounds received in action just 2 months and 3 days later 8th August 1918. He is buried in Quarrieu British Cemetery, France. Grave Ref; D. 29.

Additional Information

His effects of £6-10s-00d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his aunt Fanny Wilcock (nee Childs).
