Pre War

Archibald (Archie) was born in St Albans in 1890 to William Sibley a farm labourer, and Anna, (nee Thrussel).

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Grange Street St Albans. On the 1901 Census Archibald was living with James Sibley as a boarder.

Wartime Service

Archie enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 18092 but at some time he was transferred to 10th (Service) Battalion Hampshire Regiment.

He may have served with them at Gallipoli but the 10th Hampshires were one of the first units to land at Salonika. On the retreat from Serbia, the 10 (Irish) Division including 10 Hampshires were involved in the action at Kosturino.

Archie was reported as wounded and missing on 7 Dec 1915. And later presumed dead. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Doiran Memorial, Greece.

Additional Information

War Gratuity £3 10s and arrears of £3 4s 6d paid to his father. *1 Records found have recorded his birthplace as St Albans. This may be the case, however St Albans was the main postal location given for nearby villages and hamlets, so it may be that this information is misleading. If more accurate information found this will be updated.
