Pre War

William James was born in North Mimms, Herts., on 7 Dec 1884 to Sarah Ann Sibley. By the 1901 census he was working as a gardener in Roestock, as he was in 1911. He married Norah Anne Moore in 1916. 


Recorded as born in North Mimms and enlisting in Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

He enlisted as Private 26975 Bedfordshire Regiment but was transferred to 6th Battalion Northants Regiment with a new serial number of 43247.


He was reported Killed in Action on 26 Sep 1916 on the Somme (possibly Thiepval Ridge).  There being no remains recovered he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £1 12s 5d paid to his widow.
