William George Drury was born 1896 in Newport, Essex, the son of Frederick and Grace Drury. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Belmont Hill, Newport, Essex, where his father was an agricultural labour, but had moved to Westly Cottage, Saffron Walden by 1911 when William was 14 and working as a "boy on farm".

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Saffron Walden, Essex and served with the 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment.


He was killed in action on 20 July 1917 during the Battle for Delville Wood and is buried in the Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, France. 

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs G Drury, Norfolk Cottages, Ayot St Lawrence, Welwyn, Herts. ordered his headstone inscription: "REST IN PEACE". His father received a war gratuity of £7 10s and pay owing of £9 19s. His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week. His parents later lived at Norfolk Cottage, Ayot St Lawrence, Welwyn, Herts. She also order his headstone inscription: "Rest in Peace"
