Pre War

Born in Islington, North London in 1895 to parents George and Elizabeth. By 1901 they were living in Finsbury Park where his father was a furnace stoker. George had 3 brothers, and by 1911 they had moved to 6 Lichfield Terrace, St Margaret’s and George now had two sisters, Ethel and Elsie and George was working as a baker’s assistant.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment posted to C Company. From July 1915 until 1918 they served in France and Belgium. In 1916 they fought at the Somme, the following year at Arras and Ypres and in 1918 they were engaged at the Somme again as part of Operation Michael. On March 22nd the battalion were engaged in the 2 day battle for the Crozat Canal and it was here that George was killed as his unit fought a stubborn rear guard action.
