Pre War

Frederick Hill Claridge was born 1886 in Herne Hill, Lambeth. His mother Alice Claridge was unmarried, so Frederick was informally adopted by his uncle William Robinson and Aunt Emily (his mother's sister). On the 1901 Census he was living with them in London Road, Bishop's Stortford and working as a bricklayer's labourer.

On the 1911 Census he was still living with his uncle (now widowed) in London Road, Bishop's Stortford, but had married Elizabeth White in 1905 and had three children. He was working as a fish yardman. They had two further children before he enlisted.

Wartime Service

He Initially enlisted into the Bedfordshire Regiment under Regimental No. 13830, but transferred to the Essex Regiment, 9th Battalion, and served in France from 26 July 1915. He was wounded and probably taken to one of three Casualty Clearing Stations (20th, 41st and 55th)  which were on the site during this time but died of his wounds.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £18 10s and pay owing of £11 14s 2d for herself and her children.
