Pre War

Bernard was born in Park Sreet Village, St Albans on 14 Sep 1888 to Henry Clark, a tailor, and Harriet Anne (nee Slade). On the 1891 Census Bernard, his parents, Kate (born 1879), Annie J (born 1882), Alfred (born 1885), and Arthur (born 1891) were living in Stephens Parish Park Street. On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Alfred, Bernard, Arthur and Leonard (born 1900) were living at Frogmore, Park Street. Also living with family was Elizabeth Clark (sister to Henry Clark). On the 1911 Census still living at Frogmore were parents, Alfred (a bricklayer), Bernard (a tailor), Arthur (a merchants clerk) and Leonard (at school).

Wartime Service

Bernard attested on 18 Feb 1916 at Farnborough, Hants as Air Mechanic 2, service number 22945 Royal Flying Corps. He was promoted to Air Mechanic 1 on 1 Dec 1916, his trade was Balloon Handler, Bernard went to France on 1 Jan 1917. On 3 Sep 1917 he attached to 63 (Royal Naval) Division for Infantry training at Infantry Base Depot. On 2 Oct 1917 he was compulsory transferred to 10th (Service) Battalion, Notts & Derby (Sherwood Foresters) Regiment as Private 72320. He was reported missing on 12 Oct 1917 during First Battle of Passchendaele, (12 October 1917, an action of 3rd Battle of Ypres) and later his death was presumed on this date. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres.

Additional Information

Probate of £138 13s 3d was awarded to his father Henry, whose also received his War Gratuity of £7 and arrears of £4 8s 3d. Brother Arthur was reported to be serving in India on Bernard Records but searches revealed nothing more.
