Charles John Clark was born in Ipswich in 1885 to Henry and Phoebe Clark. On the 1891 Census he was living with his parents in Ipswich and remained there in 1901, then working as a Grocer's Assistant.  He married Emma Elizabeth Ruffle in 1906 in Edmonton and they had a child Gwenyth who was born 9 September 1911. On the 1911 Census Charles and Emma were living at Front Street, Mendelsham, Stowmarket, Suffolk and he was working as a grocer/draper. (They were living in Lindsey Road, Bishop's Stortford at the time of his death.)

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bishop's Stortford and served in Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on 12 April 1918, one of two Gunners of the RFA to die on that day who are buried in the same cemetery.

Additional Information

His widow Emma received his pay owing of £5 13s 2d and his executor, Harvey [Clark], received £4 10s. Probate was granted to Harvey Clark, manager, in London on 20 July 1918 with effects of £218 8s 6d. A pension was awarded to Emma of 26s 8d a week from 4 November 1918.
