Pre War
Stanley Charles CLARK was born in late 1891 in Sandon, Hertfordshire, son of Henry Clark, a Horse Keeper at a Brewery and Eliza Clark (nee Skipp). One of their four children. His parents married on 16th March 1889, in Sandon, Herts.
1901 Census records Stanley aged 9, living with his parents, sisters Lilian (11) and Olive (8), in Plumes Yard, Burford Street, Hoddesdon, Herts.
1911 Census, Stanley (20), is employed as a Sawyer in a Pulley Factory, living with his parents, and sister Milly (9), still at 1 Plumes Yard, Burford Street, Hoddesdon, Herts,
Stanley travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist on 29th November 1912, for 4 years’ service with the Hertfordshire Regiment Territorial Force, issued with the service No. 2016.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Stanley was still serving with Territorial Force, on 1st November 1914, the Battalion received orders to be ready for war service. He volunteered for war service. The Battalion, embarked in the evening of 5th November 1914, aboard the SS. “City of Chester” leaving at midnight, arriving at Le Havre, France, about 12 midday on 6th, from there they marched the 3 1 /2 Miles to No. 2 Rest Camp.
Within 5 days of their arrival in France, they were in action on 11th November 1914, at the First Battle of Ypres. (First Battle of Ypres 19th Oct – 22nd Nov 1914).
Stanley was Killed in Action on 18th May 1915, aged 24, during the Battle of Festubert (Battle of Festubert 15th – 27th May 1915), he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial to the missing in France. Panel 47.
