Pre War

Robert Cobbett was born in Nunhead, Surrey, in about 1885. In 1911, he was 26 and employed as a barman in a public house at 37 Hertford Road, Lower Edmonton.

He married Ada Alice Webb in 1911, with the marriage being registered in Southwark district which includes Nunhead.

Wartime Service

Robert enlisted in Colchester with the Royal Army Service Corps and served in East Africa as Corporal M/205265 with the 648th M.T. Company. He died on 23 December 1917 and was buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery.

His pension record states this was due to appendicitis contracted whilst on active service. The record also gives the dependant as Ada A Cobbett of 57, Vale Road, Bushey, born on 17/07/1890 and the birth of an Ada Alice Webb is registered in the third quarter of 1890 in the Camberwell district.

The address on the record of 57 Vale Road Bushey is crossed through and replaced with 48 Cathles Road Balham, SW London, which is also crossed through and the original address rewritten. It also shows a daughter, Louie Henrietta, born on 07/12/17, and her birth is registered in 1st quarter 1918 in Watford district. It would appear that the family may have relocated to Bushey before Robert enlisted.
