Pre War

Arthur Percy was born on 21 Oct 1886 in Harpenden to Arthur James East Duckworth, a hay and Straw Merchant, and Augusta Annie (nee Healey).


By 1891 the family had moved to Marden, Kent and in 1901 they had moved to Skinners Farm, Yalding, Kent. On 22 Oct 1906 enlisted with the Buffs (East Kent) Regiment. The 1911 Census records him as being in India, possibly Madras.


He was promoted to Corporal on 2 Feb 1913. By Sep 1913 his 7 years of service had expired and he returned to UK to be placed on the Reserve List for 5 years.

Wartime Service

On the outbreak of war in Aug 1914 Arthur was living in Bishop Stortford, Essex.


He was probably recalled to service around Nov 1914 and together with the rest of the 2nd Battalion went to France on 17 Jan 1915. The Battalion was deployed in the Ypres area and during the 2nd battle of Ypres Arthur was posted as missing and later presumed dead on or about 3 May 1915.


He is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £6 and probate of £452 2s 6d paied to his Uncle William Edward Duckworth. His arrears of £21 6 s 8d was equally divided among his 8 Aunts and Uncles.
