Pre War

William Frederick Cole was the adopted son of William Cole, a House Painter and Eliza Cole, he was born in 1898, in St. Pancras, London.


1911 Census records William aged 13, at school, and living with his family at 2, Laurel Cottages, Shenley Road, Borehamwood, Herts.

Wartime Service

William enlisted at the outbreak of war, joining the 1st/9th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridges Own), with the service number, formerly 1628, later TF/265473.


It is believed William was a prisoner of war when he died of disease on 24 September 1916, aged 18.


He is buried in the CWGC- Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq.
