Pre War

Born in 1900 in Stevenage, Herts to George and Kate Smith. 

In 1901 the family were living at 4 Walkern Road, Stevenage. Present were both parents: George (39) and Kate (26), with George and working as a stockman on an agricultural cattle farm. Their children were: Lily (4), Frank (1) and Florence at 1 month.

By 1911 the family were living at Fore Street, Weston, Stevenage, Herts. Present were both parents, George now working as farm labourer. The census recorded they had been married for 15 years with 5 children, all living. All the children listed above were present plus Ernest George (7) and Oswald Hollingworth (3).

Officially Frank was recorded as born in Stevenage and was living in Weston, when he enlisted in Hitchin.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in Hitchin. Formerly TR/9/15025 Royal West Surrey Regiment, posted to 2/2nd London Regiment. Served in France and Flanders.


Killed in the re-taking of Villers Bretonneux near Amiens.

Additional Information

Formerly Tr/9/15025, 51st R.W. Surrey Regt. War Gratuity of £6.10s awarded to father George.


His pension cards record Kate, his mother, as his next of kin, living at Fore Street, Weston, nr Stevenage, Herts., later this she was at 10 New Cottages, Hitchin Lane, Weston. After her death this was changed to his father, George, at 14 Council Cottages, Weston.
