Pre War
Fred Smith was born in 1882 in Nutfield (Redhill), Surrey, the son of Joseph and Eliza Smith.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Medshurst Road, Nutfield where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. By 1901 he was a boarder at the home of shopkeeper Fanny Bosley and her young son Frederick, and was working as a gardener.
He married Mary Flynn in 1914 in Willesden and they had a daughter Hilda. On the 1921 Census she was living at 20 Acton Lane, Harlesden, Middlesex (the same address given on the CWGC list), with her daughter Hilda aged 6.
Wartime Service
He served as a private with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 11th Battalion.
Fred died of wounds on 12 July 1920 at the the Military Hospital, Richmond Park, aged 38, and is buried in Bushey (St James) Churchyard, Hertfordshire.
