Pre War
Jesse Collins was born in Pitstone in 1869 to Charles Collins. Labourer, and Mary Ann (nee Millens).
On the 1871 Census the family of parents, Mark James (born 1864, straw plaiter), Frederick (born 1866), Jesse, and Matilda (born 1871 were living at Gubblecote, Tring.
On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Frederick, Jesse, Matilda, Walter (born 1873), Beatrice (born 1870), together with Phoebe Collins, grandmother of Jesse, were living at 32, King Street, Tring.
On the 1891 Census he is recorded lodging with the Barbers at 63, Akeman Street, Tring, his occupation being farm labourer.
He married Elizabeth Barber at Tring Parish Church on the 9th Oct 1897. on the 1901 Census Jesse and Elizabeth were living at Tunis Terrace, Herga Road, Wealdstone.
On the 1911 Census Jesse is recorded living with his wife and two children (Jessie Elizabeth (born 1903) and Harry Charles (born 1908) at 4 Clement Place, Tring, his occupation being general labourer.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for Jesse, he was enlisted in Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) in Aug 1915 as Private G/9805 and was posted to 11 (Service) Battalion (Lewisham). This Battalion went to France in May 1916 as part of 122 Brigade 41 Division taking part in the Battles of Flers-Courcelette and Le Transloy on the Somme. At some time Jesse was posted to 99 Battalion Training Reserve as Private 40332. He was reported sick and although in Connaught Hospital at Aldershot died of pneumonia there on 25 Dec 1916.
From the Parish Magazine, February 1917: “Jesse Collins, who joined the Royal West Kent Regiment in August 1915, died form a sharp attack of pneumonia at the Connaught Hospital, Aldershot on 25 December 1916. He was buried at Aldershot, with full military honours.”
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £4 5s and arrears of £1 1s 5d was paid to his widow Elizabeth who also received a pension of 22s 11d for herself and children.
