On the 1901 Census, aged 9, he was boarding at the Royal Hibernian Military School at Phoenix Park in Dublin. His father had died and his brother Martin was living with his widowed mother at the George and Dragon Public House in Codicote where his uncle was the publican.

His mother later lived at 21 Howard Street, Loughborough.
