Pre War

Thomas Conroy was born circa 1880 in Bushey, Herts. He has not been found on Censuses in his early life but on the 1911 Census he was recorded as living in the Bay Hotel, Seaford, Sussex and working as a porter.

His regimental number of 6529 suggests he joined the army in late 1901 or early 1902, perhaps to serve in the South African War (Boer War) and, having served his time, he would have been placed on the reserve list and, depending on dates call have been recalled at the outbreak of war.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Peterborough, Northamptonshire and served with the Northamptonshire Regiment, serving with the 1st Battalion in France from 12 September 1914.

Thomas was killed in action on 1 November 1914. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Additional Information

A war gratuity £5 and pay owing of £5 17s 4d were not claimed. No pension records were found.
