Harry George Dumbelton was born on 20 August 1890 in Bushey, Herts, the son of John and Alice Dumbelton and one of five children. He was baptised on 19 December 1895 at Holy Trinity Church, Haverstock Hill, Camden, London when the family were living at 11 Belmond Street, Camden. His brother John, born in 1888 and brother William, born in 1893, were baptised the same day.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 41 Castle Road, St Pancras, London, where his father was working as a railway porter. By 1911 they had moved to 10 Dickinson Street, St Pancras and Harry was working as a van setter on the railway.
He was said to be living in Hendon, Middlesex, at the time of enlistment and his mother's address on pension records is recorded as Brent Bridge House, Brent Street, Hendon, NW4.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in St Pancras, Middlesex and joined the East Surrey Regiment, serving with the 8th Battalion.
Harry was awarded the Military Medal for acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire, although the circumstances are not known. He was killed in action on 12 October 1917 but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £13 10s and pay owing of £8 2s 8d. A pension card exists with his mother as dependant but does not show any amount of pension paid.
