Herbert was born on the 18th August 1897, the son of local chimney sweep William Jelly Cooper and his wife Susannah. The family lived at Wrights Cottage in Aston and Herbert was one of eleven children.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in 1914 and was posted to the Western Front on the 5th October 1915. He had only been in France for five weeks when he was shot by a sniper whilst replacing sandbags on a parapet in front of a support trench. Herbert is buried in the Spoilbank Cemetery, near Ypres, Belgium. Although his name is recorded on the Roll of Honour in St. Mary’s church it is not recorded on the local war memorial.
