Pre War

Born in Weston to Reuben and Sarah Jane Smith. Baptised on 1 March 1885 at Weston. 1911 Census: was already enlisted as a Private in the Coldstream Guards and living at the barracks in Aldershot. (although birthplace incorrectly listed as 'Stevenall'). His wife Louisa and son Walter Ernest lived at 101 Lower Park Road, Peckham, London at the time of his death.

Wartime Service

Enlisted in London. Died of wounds the day after the battle of Cuinchy at Lillers which was a hospital centre used by five Casualty Clearing Stations between 1914 and April 1918.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £5 granted to widow Louisa and their child Walter Ernest.
