Born on 11 Jan 1884 son of Capt. Charles Devaynes Smyth, D.L., J P., of Bray Head House, Bray, Co. Wicklow, Ireland. Educated at Haileybury College 1897-1901. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 2 May 1903 and Lieutenant on 20 Apr 1907.

Wartime Service

The battalion mobilised for war while stationed in Dublin and entered France at Le Havre on 16 Aug 1914. Capt Smyth was reported missing believed killed in action near Ypres.
