He was originally a Corporal in “E” Company, the Hertfordshire Regiment, and transferred to the Bedfordshire Regiment in January 1915. He was promoted to Sergeant in January 1916 and was posted to France in July of that year. He was killed on the closing

George  is also commemorated on his family’s grave in Royston Church Additional Burial Ground. His part of the inscription reads:

SERGT. INSTR. GEORGE COOTE, SON OF THE ABOVE [Joseph & Susan Coote] KILLED IN ACTION BEAUMONT HAMEL, FRANCE,
