Walter Herbert was born in 1875 to Walter James Cooper and Agnes Eunice (nee Urry).


On the 1881 Census Walter was living at Manor Road Hasting s with his widowed mother By the 1891 Census Walter was employed as a greengrocery assistant and living at Grays Inn Road with his mother and sister Mabel. On the 1901 Walter and mother were living ay Swinton Road, St Pancras and was now a fruiterer. By the 1911 Census Walter was now living with his brother Edgar and family at 191 Pentonville Road.

Wartime Service

No Service record has been found for Walter. He was enlisted in 17th Battalion Essex Regiment as Private 59726. 17th Battalion was formed on 1 January 1917, from the 67th Provisional Battalion (Home Service) at Sheringham, Norfolk. In July 1917 it relocated to Weybourne, Norfolk.


Walter died on 6 Sep 1918 in Barnet War Hospital and was interred at Bells Hill Burial Ground, Barnet.

Additional Information

No War Gratuity was awarded and arrears of £6 8s 0d was shared by his brother Edgar and sister Mabel.
