Pre War

Jonah Sole was born in Eyeworth, Bedfordshire in 1888, the son of George and Amelia Sole (nee Gregory).


On the 1891 Census Jonah, his parents and brother Francis were living at the home of his grandfather, 80 year old Samuel Sole, in the village of Eyeworth, where his father was working as a dealer (shop). They remained in Eyeworth in 1901 and 1911 at which time Jonah was working as a labourer.


He married Grace Geeves in 1912 and they had a daughter Grace Amelia born on 26 August 1914. They lived in at The Quarries, Ashwell, Herts. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Whitehall, Middlesex on 22 February 1916 and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 6th battalion in France as part of the 112th Brigade, 37th Division.


It is believed that he was killed in the Bazentin area and was reported missing in August.  It was not until November that his widow received confirmation that he had been killed in action on 9 August 1916. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 17s 11, She also received a pension of 15 shillings a week for herself and her daughter, later increased to 18s 9d a week in 1917
