St Andrew’s Church Buckland & Chipping Memorial, Buckland

Pre War

Born in Buckland, Herts. in 1880 son of Alfred and Eliza Jane South and christened in Buckland on 23 May 1880. He was living there in 1911 as a farm labourer.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Royston, Herts. and entered France on 12 May 1915. The 1st Bedfordshires were in trenches at Hill 60 near Ypres. On 11 Jul 1915 the enemy blew up a very large mine near their trenches and five men were killed and two missing believed killed.
