Percy John Thompson was born in Oct 1891 in Tring to Samuel Carter Thompson, carpenter & joiner, and Adelaide Evangeline (nee Denchfield).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Henry (Harry, a carpenter & joiner, born 1884), Herbert (born 1888), Archibald (born 1890), Percy, Adelaide (born 1894) and Mabel (born 1898) were living at Longfield, Tring.


On the 1911 Census Percy was a general dealer and living with his parents, Adelaide and Mabel at Post Office Aston Abbotts, Bucks.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Percy. He volunteered as a Territorial Soldier in the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry as Private 5088 (later in 1917 his serial number would be 267017 in the Territorial Force renumbering) in 1st/1st Battalion. This battalion was in the South Midland Brigade of the South Midland Division and went to France on 30 Mar 1915, landing at Boulogne, on 15 May the Division was renamed as 48th (South Midland) Division and the Brigade was designated 145 Brigade. In 1916 they were present at the Battles of the Somme at Albert (1-13 Jul), Pozieres ( 23 Jul-3 Sep), Ancre Heights (1 Oct-11 Nov ),  Ancre ( 13-18 Nov). In 1917 they took part in following the German retreat to the Hindenberg Line (1st Mar-5 Apr) before moving to the Ypres sector to take part in the Battles of Passchendaele (3rd Ypres) at Langemarck (16-18 Aug), Polygon Wood (26 Sep -3 Oct), and Poelcapelle (9 Oct 1917).


In Nov 1917 the Division moved to the Italian Front  in the Adige Sector before moving to the Asiago sector taking part in the fighting on the Asiago Plateau (15-16 Jun 1918). Percy was killed in action on 8 Oct 1918.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £11 and arrears of £19  2s 6d was paid to his mother.
