Pre War

Charley (Charlie) George Cox was born in 1894 in Barkway, Hertfordshire, the son of Walter and Elizabeth Cox, and baptised on 12 August 1894 at Barkway. He was one of three children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 15 Bruce Road, South Mimms, Herts and his father was working as a tailor. By 1911 they had moved to Talbot Road, Luton, Beds and Charley was then working as a packer of straw hats. 


His parents later lived at 166 North Street, Luton, Beds

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 7th Battalion in France from 26 July 1915. At some point he was promoted from Private to Lance Corporal. 


Charley was killed in action on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He was originally buried near where he fell and was exhumed at the end of the war and re-buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £7 and pay owing of £6 7s 7d. His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week. 


N.B. Charley's birth was originally registered and baptised with the 'y' spelling, but sometimes changed to Charlie or Charles on military records.
