Pre War

Frederick Richard Springett was born in 1897 in Winslow, Bucks, the son of Richard and Nellie Springett and one of seven children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 21 Cumberland Road, Ramsgate where his father was employed as a Police Constable. They had moved to Hatfield Hyde, Herts by 1911, at which time his father was working as a Gamekeeper.


His parents later lived at Birchleigh, Birch Green, Herts.

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted in Hertford and initially joined the Hertfordshire Regiment as Private 6058. He was later transferred to the Royal Sussex Regiment and served with the 13th, 12th and 7th Battalions. 


He was killed in action on 25 November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai and has no known grave. His name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral, France.


The Bishops Hatfield Parish Magazine of January 1918: "We regret to announce the death of Private Frederick Springett who was killed in action last month at the early age of nineteen and great sympathy is felt for his father and family not only in the Hyde but throughout the parish."

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £6 11s. Pension cards exist but there is no indication of any payment being made. *1 Surname wrongly spelt with a 'c' on memorial.


Hatfield Parish Council Souvenir Committee Ledger:  Mr Springett (Father) of Gravel Pit Cottages, Hatfield Hyde, received an “In Memoriam and Roll of Honour Album”.
