Born on 2 Apr 1874 in Torphichen, West Lothian, Scotland son of Major John Ponsonby Cox (Durham Light Inf.) and Emily Eliza (Chalmer) Cox. Educated at Haileybury College 1887-91. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant from the militia on 4 Dec 1895, joined his Regiment in India and was promoted Lieutenant on 1 Dec 1897 and Captain 3 Jul 1901. Served on the NW Frontier 1897-98. He was unmarried.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of the war he was appointed 2nd in charge 8th Bn. Gordon Highlanders and entered France in May 1915. He was killed in action while leading his men in a successful attack on Dump Trench at the Battle of Loos.
