Pre War

Son of Reuben and Betsy Risebero, recorded after his at 1, St. Peter's Cottages, New Town, Hatfield, Herts.

In the 1911 Census: Archibald, age 18, is living with his parents and siblings at St. Peters Cottages, Hatfield.  Archibald is working as a bricklayer’s labourer.  Father, Reuben as a platelayer for the GN Railway. 

Archibald Risebero enlisted as a private in the 1st Hertfordshire Regiment Territorials, on 27/01/1911 for a term of 4years. Regimental number 1636, this was changed to 265090 later in his service.  

Wartime Service

According to his record he was at home until embarking for France at Southampton on 05/11/1914.  On the 29/03/15 he was appointed paid Lance Corporal. 

On 10/04/1915 appointed acting Lance Sergeant (in the field). During this period Archibald extended his active service for the duration of the war.  Promoted to substantive rank 30/11/1915 (in the field).  

He had leave to England from 10/10/1917-20/10/1917 and on return to France was appointed Company Quarter Sergeant, 15/07/1917.  Left for England 02/11/1918 and demobilized 13/03/1919, he was 25.  

During his war service Archibald had various skin ailments, bronchial catarrh in 11/1916 and at the beginning of 1918 caught influenza.  His address when demobilized was 1, St Peters Cottages, Hatfield.  

In the Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of September 1914, in the first list of men mobilised from Hatfield, recorded: “Riseboro, Archibald - St Peter’s Cottages – Territorial’.” Then in July 1919: “On the eve of the declaration of peace there passed away another of Hatfield’s soldiers, Sergeant Archibald Riseboro, the second of the family to give his life for his country and only surviving son of Mr & Mrs Riseboro of St Peter’s cottages.

      Owing to the severe privations, borne with ungrudging cheerfulness, his health was seriously impaired and it was evident that he was affected with phthisis shortly after his return home.  Soon after entering Ware Sanatorium he passed away, and his body was brought home to be buried at Newtown, his coffin being covered with the Union Jack, and a large assembly of friends and old comrades being present to do him last honours."


Archibald died in Ware Hospital, Hertfordshire.

He is the brother of Walter who also died and not recorded in the CWGC database.  Died June 19th, 1919


He was awarded the sum of 35/- from 14/03/1919 until the end of the quarter that he died.


He is buried in the family memorial grave St Luke’s Churchyard, the inscription reads:

In loving memory Betsy Riseboro also Archie
