Pre War

In the 1911 census we find Arthur living in Roestock with Grandparents James, age 73, a farm labourer and Eliza, age 70, both born North Mymms, on Arthur’s attestation he is shown as married living in Roestock Lane he was 23 years old on the 31st December 1914 when he joined the Royal field Artillery as Driver 66874. He married Daisy Selina (Beach) in 1912 and they lived at Bluehouses, Roestock Lane. They had 3 children: Dora Rose (b 1912), Edward Arthur (b 1914) and Elsie (b 1916).

Wartime Service

Arthur fell ill at Arras in April 1917 and was discharged on the 22nd November 1917 as being medically unfit, he was re-examined by a medical board on the 10th September 1918 and was found to be totally incapacitated due to Enteritis caused by the present war and he died in St. Albans Hospital on 7th February 1919 of Tuberculosis – Intestinal. His wife Daisy was present at his death. Poor Arthur served his country from the beginning of the war and yet has no entry on the North Mymms memorials, and his name has not yet been found in CWGC records. We have yet to find out where he buried – it does not appear be in St Albans.
