Pre War

Born on 2 Dec 1880 in Lucknow, India son of Sydney Charles Elphinstone Hartwell and Jeanette Marion (Jenkins) Hartwell. Educated at Haileybury College 1894–97. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant Welsh Regiment on 18 Apr 1900 from the Militia. Promoted Lieutenant on 26 Apr 1902 and transferred to the Indian Army on 13 Sep 1903. Served in Tibet Expedition (1903-04). Silver Medal of St John of Jerusalem for saving life in the earthquake at Dharmsala Apr 1905

Promoted to Captain on 18 Apr 1909. He married Emily Maybell Agnes Dobbs of 64 Morehampton Road, Dublin in St. Thomas Cathedral, Bombay, India and had one daughter.

Wartime Service

He entered France on 29 Oct 1914 and was killed in action near Festubert the following day.
