Born on 10 Jan 1882 in Chesham, Buckinghamshire son of Rev Samuel Howard and Helen Hamilton (Kendell) Hall. Educated at Twyford School, Haileybury College 1896-1899 and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant Yorkshire Regiment on 8 Jan 1901 and promoted Lieutenant on 19 Feb 1904. He transferred to the Indian Army the same year and was promoted to Captain on 8 Jan 1910. He married Lucie Gertrude Grainger in Chiswick, London on 11 Jul 1907 and had two daughters.

Wartime Service

The battalion landed in German East Africa on 1 Nov 1914 and attacked the Port of Tanga over the following three days but were beaten off with heavy casualties.
