In 1911, he was living in Westmill with James and Emma Edwards, his grandparents and working as a farm labourer.

James enlisted at Hertford as Private 15977 in the 13th Middlesex Regiment. The medal roll index card also records his service as G/67303 in the 1st London Regiment as well as the Royal Fusiliers.
