Pre War

Edward (Ted) Reynolds was born on 26th February 1894, in Tyttenhanger Green, Hertfordshire, son of George Reynolds an Agricultural Worker and Ebber/Ebba Reynolds (nee Littlechild).


He was Baptised Ted Reynolds on 26th May 1894, in the Parish of Colney-St Peter, Herts.


In 1901 Edward aged 6, lived in the fifth cottage away from The Plough PH at Tyttenhanger Green, Hertfordshire, with his parents, three brothers, Alfred (9), Leonard (4), Bertram (1), sisters, Elizabeth (11) and May (8).


The 1911 census shows that Edward’s parents had been married for 37 years, and had twelve children, although one of them died in infancy. In addition to the children already mentioned, the 1911 census records two further siblings, Edward’s older brother Arthur (33) and his younger sister Alice Florence (3). Edward (17), Edward is recorded as Ted and working as a farm labourer.

Wartime Service

We believe Edward was a serving soldier with the Queens Royal Lancers at the outbreak of war. He landed in France on 15th August 1914, seeing action at Mons and the retreat from Mons. Edward was Killed in Action on 30th October 1914, aged 19, he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the missing, Panel 5.


By the end of the year almost all the original force had been lost.


His Medal Index Card (MIC) indicate that Edward joined the Lancers as a Private, promoted to Lance Corporal and first entered the war in France on 15th August 1914. He was awarded the 1914 Mons Star, British War and Victory Medals.

Additional Information

His effects of £11-19s-10d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £5, went to his father George Reynolds.


Edward was one of six brothers who served in the Great War. Brother 6825 Company Sergeant Major William Reynolds of the Bedfordshire Regiment was Killed in Action on 6th August 1918.
