Pre War
Born 27/08/1881 in Nuthampstead, Nr Barkway lived with parents Ralph and Rebecca, brothers Ralph, Stanley and Francis and sisters Kate & Eva. Married Ellen Ives in 1908 in Weymouth and lived at 44 Landguard End Road, Eastney, Portsmouth. Was working locally as a labourer. His family had moved to 26 South Street, Stanstead Abbotts.
Wartime Service
Harry joined the Navy as a stoker and by 1916 had been promoted to Leading Stoker. Was serving on board HM submarine E30. Had been mentioned in despatches prior to his death on 22/11/1916 when the vessel was lost in the North Sea, the cause at the time unknown. It possibly hit a mine off Orford Ness in Suffolk where a minefield was discovered on 25/11/1916.
Harry had served in the Royal Navy for 15 years at the time of his death.
Additional Information
Harry had three brothers who were serving in the army during the war, one of whom, Ralph, was killed in France in January 1915.
