Pre War

Percy was born in Rickmansworth in 1899, son of Francis William and Edith Wallington. In 1901 they were living at Church Street, Batchworth, his father being a baker. Percy had an older sister, Gladys and a younger sister Evelyn. Edith’s sister was also living with them and they had a servant living in the house. In 1911, aged 11 and with 3 more siblings, he was living at 92 Church Street, Rickmansworth, a 7 roomed house, and was at school. His father, Francis, was described as a baker working on his own account. Francis died in 1912 in Rickmansworth.

Wartime Service

Percy enlisted on 01.09.1914 at Marylebone, giving his age as 19 years although he was, in fact, just 15. The description of him gives his height 5ft 5in, eyes blue, hair fair, fresh complexion. His occupation was a clerk. He stated that he had not lived in his father’s house for the past 3 years. He entered the Balkans on 09.07.1915. On May 4th 1916, after nearly 2 year’s service, he was discharged from the Army, as he was underage. On his discharge aged just 16 years 8 months, his character was described as ‘Very Good’. It was stated that ‘2682 Pte Wallington P has served with the Royal Munster Fusiliers for 1 year 341 days. His conduct has been very good and he is smart, clean and very willing’. His mother’s address given as c/o Mr Jaling’s house, Cassio Road, which was given as his intended place of residence.

After he was discharged from the army in 1916, he presumably went to live with his mother in Cassio Road, Watford. He died in Lewisham in 1920, age 20.
