Pre War

William Ephgrave was born in 1877 in Tewin, Welwyn to Robert and Susan Ephgrave and baptised there on 8 July 1877. He lived in Upper Green, Tewin  until he joined the army in 1896 when he was 18 and served with Royal Field Artillery (reg. No. 14162). He served in India from December 1898 to January 1904, and was placed on Reserve in the UK until February 1908 when he attested for a further four years on Reserve.


He was back living with his parents on the 1911 Census and married Hannah Underwood in 1912.  They had a daughter Gwendoline Ellen born 27 May 1914 and baptised at Tewin on 21 February 1915.  He was living at Black Farm, Welwyn, on re-enlistment and working as a farm labourer.

Wartime Service

Having been a serving solder and also having served his time on Reserve, William was not required to fight when war broke out, but decided to re-enlist at age 37 into the Hertfordshire Regiment in November 1914. He was initially accepted and served for 205 days before being discharged as medically unfit on 10 June 1915 and received a Silver War Badge No. 128065. 


He died on 4 December 1921 in Hertfordshire of a Thoracic Aneurism - Bronchitis.

Additional Information

William Ephgrave did not qualify for a Commonwealth War Grave as he died too long after the end of the war to qualify.
