St Mark’s Church Plaque, Colney Heath

Pre War

Born in Odiham, Hampshire and in 1911 was living in The Splash, Smallford, Hertfordshire. His parents were William & Sarah Winch. The Colney Heath School log records that William (pupil no 89) attended the school with his brothers Arthur and Edward; and sisters Dorothy and Alice. The log also confirms William’s attendance between 5th April 1909 and 14th March 1913 when he left. His birthday was 3rd April 1899. The other school log entries are as follows: * Arthur (pupil no 90) commenced at school on 5th April 1909 and left on 9th October 1914 (DoB: 11th October 1900). * Dorothy (pupil no 92) commenced at school on 3rd May 1909 and left on 15th May 1915 (DoB: 16th May 1904). * Alice (pupil no 133) commenced at school on 22nd May 1911 and left on 27th July 1920 (DoB: 6th June 1906). * Edward (pupil no 208) commenced at school on 2nd September 1913, however he died on 31st October 1913 (DoB: 27th August 1908). He may have joined up straight from school.

Wartime Service

According to the St Mark’s burial register William died at St Davids Home, 12 Castlebar Hill, Ealing (a hospital during WW1) and is buried in the old graveyard, near to Charles Jolly by the Christian Centre car park. Unfortunately, the plot is not marked or recorded in the church records. Interestingly enough, the St David’s Home in Ealing still operates to this day as a care home of the elderly and physically disabled.
