William Sampson was born in Taunton in 1886 (baptised 1 Aug 1886) to William Sampson, engine fitter, and Emily (nee Mitcham).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, William, and Lily (born 1889), were living at 4 King Street, Taunton.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, William (an errand boy), Lily, Florence (born 1892) and Charles (born 1894) were living at 81, Iddesleigh Road, Bedford.
On the 1911 Census the family of parents, William, Lily, Florence, Charles and Gertrude (born 1902) were living at 78, Iddesleigh Road, Bedford.
William married Alice Sophie Hazell in autumn 1911.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for William who volunteered to serve in the Bedfordshire Regiment. His Serial Number in other Records can be 3/4998 or 3/7798, the 3/ prefix suggests it was issued for the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, the normal posting for trainees, the four figures could due to transcription errors. He went to France on 4 Jan 1915 to join 1st Battalion in the field at Ypres.
The 1st Battalion had been in France since 15 Aug 1914 as part of 15 Brigade, 5 Division and in 1915 were to take part in the Capture of Hill 60 (17-22 Apr 1915). William was killed in this action on 20 April 1915.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £2 14s 10d was paid to his widow, who later married A. S. Wilson , of 19, Wood St., Luton., and later lived 53 Pixmore Avenue, Letchworth, Herts.
