Albert was born on 15 Oct 1880 baptised 5 Dec 1880) to Richard Childs, an agricultural labourer, and Eliza (nee Waller). On the 1881 Census Richard, Eliza and Albert were living at Lobble (Lowbell) Lane, London Colney.


On the 1891 Census Albert and his parents were living at Park Street with Harry (born 1882), Alice (born 1886), Fred (born 1887), and Kate (born 1890). On the 1901 Census Albert was listed as a Farm Labourer as were his brothers Harry and Fred, His Father Richard was sewage Farm labourer, were living with mother Eliza at Park Street with Kate, Annie (born 1891), Herbert (born 1894), Mary (born 1896), Clara (born 1898 and Arthur (born 1901). On the 1911 Census Albert was living with his father (now a Builders Labourer), mother, Herbert (a farm labourer), Clara, and Arthur.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Albert. He must have volunteered for service in 1914 as Private 6494 East Surrey Regiment and went to France on 27 Apr 1915.


He was later transferred to the Labour Corps as Private 430613.

Additional Information

His brother Herbert served with Royal Field Artillery as Gunner 86647 and was killed in action at Cape Heles, Gallipoli.
