Alfred George Ernest Pickett was born in July 1896 in Cheshunt, Herts, son of Jabez Pickett a, General Labourer and Susan Pickett (nee Davies).


1901 Census record Alfred aged 4, living with his parents, half-brother William Armstrong (17), sisters Maud (8) and May (2) in Windmill Lane, Hampton Place, Cheshunt, Herts.


His mother Susan Pickett died in 1906, aged 54, the death was registered in Edmonton, Middx.


He attended St Marys Infants school and Dewhurst Endowed Boys school, Cheshunt.


1911 Census, Alfred (14), his widowed father Jabez and sister May (13), are living with his married sister Nellie Rose Woodcock, her husband Percy Walter and their son Walter Percy Woodcock at, 2 Rowlands Fields, Cheshunt, Herts. Alfred is working as a Nursery Hand.


Alfred enlisted at Mill Hill, Middx on 23rd December 1912, giving his date of birth as 23rd June 1895, (we believe this is incorrect) and his occupation as a Nursery Man, he enlisted for 7 years in the colours and 5 years in the Reserve. Posted to the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment) with the service number 14405. Serving at home with the 1st & 2nd Battalions.


His father Jabez died in the early part of 1914, aged 66, the death was registered in Edmonton, Middx.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war Alfred was still a serving soldier with the Middlesex Regiment, he disembarked at Le Havre, France, on 16th August 1914, with the 1st battalion, seeing action on the Western Front.


He returned home in December 1916, for three months, it is not known if this was due to him being wounded, for training or leave. He returned to France on 5th March 1917, joining the 2nd Battalion at the front, he was Killed in Action just 21 days later on 26th March 1917, aged 20. He is buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Additional Information

His effects of £9-05-00, pay Owing and his war gratuity of £15, went to his sister Nellie Rose Woodcock.
