Pre War
Charles Pegram was born in 1882 in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, son of William Pegram a, Gardener and Elizabeth Pegram (nee Draper). One of seven Children although three died in infancy.
Charles was Baptised on 10th March 1883, in Waltham Cross, Herts.
1891 Census records Charles aged 8, living with his parents, brothers William (19), James (14) and sister Amelia (16) at, Culverstone Green, Ash, Kent.
On 2nd January 1899, Charles enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers for 7 years with the Colours and 5 years in the Reserves and issued with the service number 7035, joining at Hounslow, Middx. He served at home for 8 months, then in September 1899, posted to Gibraltar, in May 1901 to Egypt, November 1903 to Bermuda where he extended his service, December 1905 to South Africa, returning home in January 1907,
Charles married Annie Strutton of Enfield Highway, Middx, the daughter of Charles and Louisa Strutton on 4th August 1908 in Edmonton, Middx. They went on to have a daughter Agnes born in June 1909.
On completion of 12 years’ service, he was discharged on 1st January 1911, and posted to the Army reserve.
1911 Census records Charles, as married to Annie, they have a daughter Agnes aged 1, and he is employed as a Hall Porter, living at, 42 Iverson Road, Hampstead, Middx.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Charles returned to his Regiment, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). He disembarked at Le Havre, France on 11th November 1914.
Seeing action on the Western Front, he died on 21st June 1915, at No. 2 Casualty Clearing Station, Bailleul, France, of wounds received in action. He is buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.
Additional Information
Annie received a widow Pension of 15/6 a week from 10th January 1916. His effects of £6, war gratuity went to Annie, his pay owing was split between Annie £3-01- 03, and his daughter Agnes £6-02-02.
He is recorded as C. PEGRUM on the Cheshunt Town War Memorial.
The CWGC record his service number as 735 not 7035.
