Pre War

Charles Percy Thacker was born in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, on 22 October 1898, son of Clark Thacker, a Brickyard Worker and Jessie Elizabeth Thacker (nee Vyse). One of nine children.


Baptised on 15 January 1899, at the Parish Church, Elstree, Herts.


1901 Census records Charles aged 2, living with his parents, sisters Lillian (6), Jessie 4, and brother Edwin (9 Months), in Borehamwood, Herts.


1911 Census records Charles aged 12, at school, living with his parents, four sisters and three brothers at, 5, Brickfield Cottages, Borehamwood, Herts. Sister Grace was born in 1912.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted at Watford, Herts, on 11 September 1916, aged 17 yrs. & 10 months, his address was 1, Essex Road, Borehamwood, Herts. Posted to the Army Reserve the following day 12 September.


He was mobilised for war service on 22 March 1917, and posted to the 25th Training Reserve Battalion, with the service number 2685.


Transferred to the East Surrey Regiment with the service number 35995, on 17 August 1917, serving with the 3rd & 12th Battalions. It is believed Charles arrived in France in November 1917, He was reported missing in action and presumed Killed on 24th March 1918. 

Additional Information

His mother Jessie Thacker of 1, Essex Road, Borehamwood, Herts, received a Dependents Pension of 6/- a week from 17 December 1918. His effects of £8-7s-0d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5-10s-0d, went to his father Clark Thacker.
