Charles William Neale was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1897, son of James Edgar Neale a, Signalman with the Great Eastern Railway Company and Elizabeth “Betsey” (Warwick) Neale. One of 13 children although three died in infancy.


1901 Census records Charles aged 4, living with his parents, and four sisters at, 51 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt, Herts. His Grandmother Widow Elizabeth Neale was living with the family.


1911 Census, Charles aged 14, had left school and was working as a Nursery Worker, living with his parents, three brothers and two sisters at, 26 Dewhurst Road, Cheshunt, Herts. Brother Herbert Neale was born in 1912.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted at London, posted to the 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) with the service Number G/1250.


The Battalion completed their Training near Aldershot, between February & May 1915. Charles arrived with his Battalion at Boulogne, France on 1st June 1915.


He died in Hospital on 23rd October 1915, aged 18, of wounds received in action. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.

Additional Information

His effects of £3-2-8, pay owing and his war gratuity of £4, went to his father James.


His Headstone inscription of “NOW THE BATTLE DAY IS PAST” was requested by his mother “Betsey”, of 26 Dewhurst Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
