Pre War

Christopher John was born in1879 in Kentish Town, London to William John Rumsby, a commercial clerk, and Emily Biel (sometimes Beale).


On the 1881 Census the family were living at Peckwater Street, St Pancras and on the 1891 Census were at Carlton Street, St Pancras. There were 5 sons, Christopher being the second youngest. On the 1901 Census Christopher was boarding in Kentish Town while his parents had moved into the Maple Almshouses on Clarence Road, Harpenden.

Wartime Service

Christopher enlisted in 1916 for the Royal Fusiliers as Private 232266 but in a later organising of the Territoals was numbered as 232768.


He went to France on 4 April 1917 joining 2nd Battalion. Christopher died in action on 16 Aug 1917 during the Battle of Langemarck (part of 3rd Ypres, Passchendaele). He was not recovered and is remembered on the Menin Gate.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £5 10s and arrears of £5 7s were paid to his father. Younger brother Arthur served with Middx Regt being killed in action on 2 Jul 1916.
