Pre War

George Frederick King was born on 11 Feb 1874 in Almondsbury, Gloucs in 1874, the son of George and Emma King and baptised on 19 April 1874 at St Mary, Almondsbury, Gloucs.


On the 1901 Census he was living with his family at The Common, Almondsbury, Gloucs and working as a Platelayer on the Railway. 


He married Amelia Jane Kelly in 1910 in Hemel Hempstead. They later lived at Hampstead, London. 


Her address on pension records was 7 Eldon Road, Reading and later 21 Mount View, Rickmansworth, Herts. 

Wartime Service

George enlisted in Hampstead and served with the 5th Reserve Cavalry at No. 5 Cavalry Depot at Bristol (Horfield Barracks).


He died on 14 December 1917 at the Military Hospital in Sutton Veney, Salisbury, Wilts, suffering from chronic nephritis and cerebral haemorrhage. 


He is buried in Heath Lane Cemetery, Hemel Hempstead, Herts.

(N.B. Unable to find medal records but he would have been entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal)

Additional Information

His widow Amelia received a war gratuity of £12 5s and two separate payments of pay owing of 8s 9d and £12 10s 9d. She also received a pension of 13 9d a week.
