Pre War
John William MASON was born in Broxted, Essex*1, in late 1877. Son of Emily Mason.
He was baptised on 12th February 1878, at St Mary the Virgin, Broxted, Essex.
John married Ada Blanche Adams of St Pancras, Lon/Middx, the daughter of Alfred and Clara Adams on 25th December 1900, at The Church of Saint Martin, Vicars Road, Kentish Town, London. They went on to have three children, Hilda Mary (B1902), Frank (B 1903) and William (B 1915).
1911 Census records John as married to Ada, they have two children Hilda (9) and Frank (7), living at 26 Holmes Road, Kentish Town, Lon/Middx. John is employed as a Liftman for the London Underground Railway.
Wartime Service
John enlisted at Mill Hill Barracks, Middx, at the HQ of the Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) issued with the service number G/10687. On completion of his training John was sent to France arriving on 15th December 1915, promoted to Lance Corporal.
He died on 5th May 1918, aged 40, of wounds received in action and is buried in Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-sur-Somme, France. Grave reference II.B. 2.
Additional Information
Ada received a grant of £7, on the 18th May 1918, a widow’s pension of 25/5 (£1-05s-05d) a week from 11th November 1918, and his effects of £15-15s-02d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £14.
1921 Census records Ada, a widow, on Household Duties, living with the children, Hilda (19), Frank (18) and William (6) at 122 Harringay Road, South Tottenham, Middx.
*1 The SDITGW record his place of birth as Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, no corresponding records were found to confirm this, the only John William Mason married to an Ada Blanche, was born in Broxted, Essex, this research is based on these findings.
