James Joseph Arthur Hamilton was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire
in 1894, son of William George Hamilton, it is believed his father George was a
serving soldier at the time of his birth and Mary Ann Hamilton (nee Doren. The
eldest of seven children, although two died in infancy.
1901 Census records James aged 7, living with his parents,
brothers John (5) and Stanley (2) at, 13 Mayfield Road, Green Street, Enfield,
Middx. His father is now employed at The Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield,
Middx.
In the early part of 1909, James travelled to Aldershot, Hants,
to enlist in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers (RDF), issued with the service number 10384.
1911 Census record James aged 17, single and a Private in
the Royal Dublin Fusiliers (RDF) stationed at Tournay Barracks, Marlborough
Line, Aldershot, Hants.
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war, the 2nd Battalion, RDF
were stationed at Milton Barracks, Gravesend, Kent. Moved to Harrow, Middx, and
mobilized for war, landing at Boulogne, France, on the 22nd August
1914, seeing action at The Battles of The Marne, The Aisne and Messines in 1914.
James was reported missing presumed Killed in Action on the 26th
April 1915, at Saint Julian, during the Second Battle of Ypres, (22nd
April to 25th May 1915). He has no known grave and is commemorated
on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium to the missing.
Additional Information
His effects of £27-8s-5d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of
£8, went to his father William Hamilton.
